Schools

In the last three and a half years the club has formed excellent partnerships with Paignton Community and Sports College (PCSC) and the Torbay Sports Partnership. Through these partnerships, we have been able to offer curriculum gymnastics by coaching in a large number of Torbay Primary Schools, working with children across Key stages 1 and 2. We have also coached in 3 local Secondary Schools, working with children in Key stage 3.

We coach at ‘Out of School’ and ‘After School’ activities at primary and secondary level and in ‘Holiday Sessions’ run by PCSC. We also run a similar scheme with South Dartmoor Community and Sports College. Click the following buttons to find out more about our schools activities.

Work with Primary Schools

The club provides 2 coaches to work during the children's usual PE class. We attend each school for 6 weeks covering all curriculum requirements for the year group we are working with, and finishing in week 6 with a badge assessment session where the children work towards passing a BG achievement award. After we have completed the 6 week block at each of the schools we invite all the children we have worked with into the club for a free session to try out the skills they have learnt, on the apparatus at the gym.

The scheme has proved very successful, it provides specialist coaching for teachers who highlighted gymnastics as an area where they felt this was needed. It has also helped to promote gymnastics to a wider audience and provided a link between school and club sports. One recent development is to highlight potentially gifted children in these sessions. The aim is to ensure they are put on Gifted and Talented registers at their schools and to encourage them to attend club sessions to fulfil their potential.

The club has now delivered the Gymnastic element of the National Curriculum to 24 schools (with several visits to some of these) and over 1660 children, a result of which we are very proud. Of those taught in the schools, 100 have joined the club.
