Special Needs (GMPD)

We take great pride in our GMPD (Gymnastics and Movement for People with Disabilities) group, our special needs competitive squad compete at National Level at Special Olympic competitions. At present we are the only club in the South West to compete in GMPD.

We are a fully inclusive and ethical club and gymnasts with special needs can be integrated into all of our recreational sessions. Our GMPD classes cater for recreational and competitive gymnasts with a wide variety of special needs. These classes focus on gross motor skills and physical development. The children work in small groups with experienced, sensitive and specially qualified coaches in a safe environment.

Summary of awards received by our GMPD squad and coaches

A special needs class has been part of South Devon School of Gymnastics for the last 10 years. It caters for young people with all aspects of disabilities, learning, physical, sight and hearing. Our aim is to help with co-ordination, agility and ability; in some instances it can take months or years to achieve a sinple move. If the gymnasts are able and capable we will enter them for competitions. Over the years we have represented the Club and the South West region at National level, bringing home medals from each competition.

Our gymnsats representing the Club have gained Sports personality awards from the Torbay, Teignbridge and South Hams councils.
